When Democracy and Monarchy Clash...

then in the past we always had a bad outcome, though not always due to the monarchy (remember the French Revolution - a first in overthrowing a government and then falling into unmitigated slaughter - some would say genocide).
Well, it seems that the very few liberties the Kuweiti people enjoy is not thanks to the democratic majority, but due to the monarchy of Kuweit. Read here. It's not perfect, because the emir certainly is not the most liberal person (many things western he doesn't enjoy and would never defend), however he is more sane in his believes than the majority party leaders and their followers! At least that is from a western point of view.

Of course, with the wrong person as the head of state in such a country, it could very well go downhill very fast. A monarchy stands and falls with its head of state. Yet, democracies have not proven to be a shield against that in any way either...
